Soul and Sport Ventures™ Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an age limit, and are there exceptions?

Yes, you must be at least 21 years old prior to your departure date to participate. We require a copy of your driver’s License upon payment. We keep this copy in our records and use it to verify your age.

Are the adventures physically challenging and do I have to be a good swimmer?

You need to be moderately fit and enjoy being outdoors. Surf lessons are conducted in water that is generally chest high, in a sand bottomed bay.  All of our activities are led by our experienced guides and coaches that will help you in overcoming any physical or mental obstacles you may encounter. We will offer you as much challenge as you desire. Our instructor to guest ratio is one to four. The energy of the group always helps fuel and supports you. We don't recommend Soul and Sports Ventures™ for women who are pregnant, have major health problems, existing injuries, or who take medication that would restrict hiking, swimming, breathing, or impair good judgment. Each guest is required to assess their own abilities and conditions when deciding to join Soul and Sport Ventures™.

How much spending money should I bring?

This is up to the individual. The only thing our retreats do not cover are airfare, shopping, any alcoholic beverages, any additional activities you may choose outside of those in your itinerary and two evening meals for Town Night, so you can enjoy a little evening exploration on your own.

How big is the group?

We accommodate indvidiuals and groups up to 12. Most of our groups range between 8 and 12 women. This gives you the opportunity to get to know all the people in the group, plus you will get to know the local instructors, guides and staff.  A small group allows for a more personal atmosphere and less touristy vacation.

I'm going by myself. Is that ok?

Absolutely, most of our guests come by themselves and leave feeling part of our “ohana” (family). It’s a wonderful place to make new friends, some of which will last a lifetime. You will find that many of the women that attend have the same adventurous spirit as you. Women from all walks of life, backgrounds and ages attend our retreats. The diversity makes for a greater experience for all.

How long are the trips?

Each Soul and Sport Ventures™ retreat is a full week. It is seven nights and eight days, which we believe you need to really experience Kauai and still have time to unwind and relax.

Why are your retreats only for women?

At Soul and Sport Ventures™ we believe that travel and adventure helps people unlock their passion for life. We spend so much of our time in life dealing with jobs, families, relationships and responsibilities that we often do not take any time out for ourselves. Whether we are giving or receiving, your presence creates a unique experience for everyone. We want to encourage everyone to get out and see the world and live in the moment!

Where will we be staying?

We will be staying at elegant, spacious homes on the north shore in Princeville and Hanalei. We feel staying in a home as opposed to a hotel, helps facilitate the camaraderie of the group and creates a personal atmosphere. It allow for us to gather and “talk story” about the days events. Enjoy each other experiences and share them with laughter and appreciation.

Do I have to share a room?

Yes all retreats are set up as shared rooms with single beds. Room layouts and specifics will be discussed at time of reservation. If you are travelling with a partner, please indicate that when booking your retreat, so we can accommodate you in the best way possible.

Will I have time to explore Kauai on my own?

Yes, though we have several adventures planned, you will have time during your week in Kauai to hang out with new friends, lay at the beach, and visit local restaurants.

What’s the weather like?

Weather on Kauai is moderate year-round. Winter temperatures during the day are in the 70s and in spring, summer and fall 70 - 80s. Evenings tend to be 60 - 70. The North Shore has beautiful rainbows, rain showers and sunshine.

Will I have internet access?

Yes, we have internet access, feel free to bring a laptop. Local and national phone service is available. We will provide you and your emergency contact person with the phone number.

What time do I schedule my flight and which airport do I fly into?

Please book your flights to arrive on the first posted retreat date and to depart on the last posted retreat date to and from Lihue, Hawaii.
There are many direct flights from the mainland or connections through Honolulu.

Is transportation provided to and from the airport?

Yes, we provide a scheduled shuttle to and from the airport. The Soul and Sport Ventures™ shuttle is available between 2pm and 6pm on travel days only. If you miss your shuttle, ground transportation via bus or taxi will be at your own expense.

Do I need travel cancellation or travel medical insurance?

We strongly recommend purchasing cancellation insurance through your travel agent. Although there are many companies that offer travel insurance, we suggest InsureMyTrip.com. All travel insurance companies have different coverage. Make sure you get the coverage you desire by discussing all their choices.

What happens when I arrive?

A Soul and Sport Ventures™ staff member will be at the airport to greet you and bring you back to the house. After settling in, the whole group will have a meal together so we can all get to know each other and go over the week's events.

I have never surfed. Is Kauai a good place to learn?

Surfing is a sport practiced more and more by women of all body types, ages and backgrounds. Kauai is an incredible place to learn. The surf break is a great beginner's wave, the water is warm, a sand bottom beach and you will have the best cheering squad you could ever ask for. If you are in reasonably good physical condition and have the desire to try, then we’ll have you standing up in no time. Surfing is a great way to get comfortable in the ocean, have an exhilarating experience and have a lot of laughs.

Can I bring my own surfboard?

Of course! But check with your airline regarding extra charges and restrictions (some may not transport long boards). We have a variety of custom shaped long boards at 8 and 9 foot plus we also have "foamy" long boards for more flotation and comfort when starting out. If you need more information regarding our equipment, please feel free to call us.

Do I need a rash guard?

We strongly recommend wearing a rash guard regardless of the time of year. It will help protect you from any irritation while learning to surf.

What exercises can I do to prepare for my surfing adventure?

Any type of upper body exercises are good to help strengthen the muscles for surfing. Push-ups are great and simple to do in your home. Also swimming, hiking or any other cardio will help build endurance. We have a personal trainer on staff that would be more than happy to help you with a strength training regimen to prepare for any of our retreats for a discounted price. It is not necessary, but is only available to enhance your experience. His email address is erik@soulandsportventures.com.
